Welcome to the Class! / Writing #1: Future Hopes

Welcome to the Journalism class of 2009! This class will give you a chance to practice your writing skills and find out what a career in Journalism could look like. You will also get a chance to organize and write columns for our very own newspaper. This class will oversee the making of a newspaper from start to finish. In preparation for this, you will have your own personal blog on which you will post practice columns and news reports.

Here are some assignments which you will post on your blogs this semester:


  • POST #1: DONE! 1-3 paragraphs -- e.g., description, introspective regarding the future, etc.
  • POST #2: DONE! Which would you rather...? (imaginative writing)
  • POST #3: DONE! News story (1A and 1B): from biased and unbiased perspectives
  • POST #4: DONE! Re-telling of "fairy story" as a 200-250 word news story
  • POST #5: Cultural Differences (interview article 350-500 words)
  • News story practice (2): In-depth news of car crash
  • News story (3) In-depth local news
  • Writing using quotes / Using photos; writing photo captions and headlines
  • Feature writing (1): Human interest story
  • Feature writing (2): Profile
  • Feature writing (3): News or informative feature
  • Editorial (1): Expressing an opinion
  • Editorial (2): Complaint letter to the editor
  • Column writing: Humorous, Interpretative, Lifestyle or Personal
  • Review: film, book, CD
  • Sports writing
